Guide
What is a micro-influencer?
A micro-influencer is a creator with a small but engaged following — roughly 3,000 to 100,000 followers — whose recommendations still land like advice from a friend. They are the tier brands increasingly prefer, and the tier most creators actually are. This guide covers the definition, the numbers brands care about, what micro-influencers charge, and how to get brand deals as one.
The influencer tiers
Definitions vary by platform, but the industry has settled on roughly these bands:
| Tier | Followers | Typical engagement | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1K–10K | 5–10% | Hyper-local, gifted seeding |
| Micro | 10K–100K | 2–6% | Gifted, paid, UGC — the sweet spot for small brands |
| Mid-tier | 100K–500K | 1.5–3% | Paid campaigns, launches |
| Macro | 500K–1M | 1–2% | Awareness |
| Mega | 1M+ | <1% | Celebrity-style reach |
Engagement figures are typical Instagram ranges; TikTok runs higher across every tier. Kitvine accepts creators from 3,000 followers because for gifted and small paid campaigns, engagement matters more than the 10K line.
Why brands prefer micro-influencers
- Engagement. Followers of a 20K account see and act on posts at rates large accounts can't match. The audience is there for the person, not the numbers.
- Trust. A recommendation from someone with 15K followers reads as a friend's opinion. From 2M followers it reads as an ad.
- Cost. Five micro-influencers at $100–$300 each usually beat one macro-influencer at $2,000+ — more content, more audiences, less risk if one underperforms.
- Content. Micro-creators make usable UGC: product shots, honest reviews, routines. Brands reuse it in ads, which is often worth more than the post itself.
- Niche fit. A skincare brand can find twenty creators whose entire feed is skincare. That precision doesn't exist at macro scale.
The numbers that matter
When a brand evaluates a micro-influencer, they look at three things, in this order:
- Engagement rate. Likes + comments on your last 10 posts ÷ followers. 3–6% is good, 6%+ is excellent. Calculate yours.
- Audience fit. Age, gender split, top countries. A US brand shipping product needs a US audience, full stop.
- Content quality. Face on camera, good light, consistent posting in the last 30 days. Brands scroll your grid before they read your numbers.
Follower count is fourth. It sets your price band; it doesn't get you the deal.
What micro-influencers charge
Most micro-influencer collaborations land between $25 and $500. Gifted deals (free product, no fee) sit at the bottom; a paid Reel or TikTok with usage rights sits at the top. The common rule of thumb is $100 per 10,000 followers for a single feed post, then adjusted for engagement, video, exclusivity and how long the brand can reuse the content.

How to become a micro-influencer
- Pick one niche and stay in it. "Skincare for oily skin" grows faster than "lifestyle".
- Face on camera, consistently. Three to five posts a week, Reels or TikToks first. Brands want a person, not a mood board.
- Engage back. Reply to every comment for the first year. Engagement rate is built in the comments, not the captions.
- Cross 3,000 real followers. Never buy followers — brands check the like-to-follower ratio and it ends the conversation.
- Make a media kit before you pitch anyone. See below.
How to get brand deals as a micro-influencer
Three channels, and you should run all of them:
- Be findable. List yourself where brands search — a creator marketplace where your profile is a full media kit with rates. On Kitvine, your kit is also where brands we onboard can filter by niche, location and engagement and invite you.
- Pitch directly. DM or email 5 brands a week whose products you already use. Lead with one specific idea, attach your kit link, keep it under 80 words.
- Tag brands in organic posts. Brands mine their tagged photos for creators to gift. It's the single most common way first deals start.
All three end at the same place: a brand looking at your media kit. Here's exactly what to put in it.

How many followers is a micro-influencer?
Most brands and platforms define micro-influencers as creators with roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers. Many marketplaces, including Kitvine, extend the lower bound to about 3,000 because engagement, not reach, is what small brands are buying. Below that is usually called nano; above 100K is mid-tier or macro.
Why do brands prefer micro-influencers?
Three reasons: engagement rates are typically 2–5× higher than with large accounts, rates are affordable enough to run several collaborations at once, and the audience trusts recommendations from someone who feels like a peer. For a small brand, five micro-influencers usually outperform one macro-influencer at the same cost.
How much do micro-influencers make per post?
A common range is $25–$500 per collaboration, with gifted (free product) deals at the low end and paid video with usage rights at the top. A widely used starting point is about $100 per 10,000 followers for a single feed post, adjusted for engagement, format and exclusivity.
What is a good engagement rate for a micro-influencer?
On Instagram, 3–6% is solid for the 10K–50K range and anything above 6% is excellent. TikTok rates run higher. Calculate it as likes plus comments on your last 10 posts, divided by followers.
How do I become a micro-influencer?
Pick a niche, post consistently with your face on camera, and grow to 3,000+ genuine followers. Then put together a media kit with your stats, rates and audience so brands can evaluate you in seconds — that's the step most creators skip.
Do micro-influencers need a media kit?
Yes. A media kit is the first thing a brand asks for, and having one ready is often the difference between getting the deal and being skipped. It should include your handle, follower count, engagement rate, niche, rates, content types and audience snapshot.
